Long before the streets, houses and boats, this coastline was already holding stories. Among stones, shells and other traces left by people over time, Ericeira reveals an ancient and profound connection with the Atlantic. A story that began long before us and that still lives in the cliffs, beaches and sea that shaped this land and its people.
For generations, rascas were part of Ericeira’s maritime life. Small boats associated with coastal fishing, used by men who knew the sea, its currents, seabeds and rhythms. More than boats, they were working vessels and companions in a demanding life shaped by early mornings, tides and the return to shore. The rascas remain part of the memory of an Ericeira deeply connected to the sea and its people.
For centuries, the sea was much more than the landscape of Ericeira. It was work, food, trade and a way of life. And the port stood at the heart of that relationship. It was from the port that generations of men and women built their connection with the Atlantic. From fishing to the arrival of the catch, from preparing the boats to selling the fish at the auction, an entire community grew facing the sea. The port helped shape Ericeira and became an essential part of the identity of its people. Here, a community deeply connected to the ocean grew — the Jagozes — whose memory can still be found in the boats, fishing traditions, fishermen’s stories and everyday life of the village. Even today, the port is more than a place where boats arrive and depart. It is a living part of Ericeira’s history.
